Our
Methodology

Every ranking on The Lister is the product of structured research, weighted scoring, and editorial review - not sponsored placements. Here is exactly how we do it.

How Rankings Are Built

Each list begins with a market survey - we identify every major player in a category, then filter for tools with at least 6 months of publicly documented track record.

Shortlisted tools are evaluated across five weighted criteria (detailed below). Each criterion is scored from 1–10 by at least two independent analysts. Scores are averaged, weighted, and aggregated into a final composite score out of 10.

Lists are reviewed quarterly or when a significant product update occurs. The “Updated” date shown on each list reflects the most recent full review cycle.

Scoring Criteria

01

AI Accuracy & Backtesting

Weight: 30%

We evaluate tools based on documented backtesting results, methodology transparency, and independently verifiable performance claims. We do not accept vendor-provided numbers without corroborating evidence.

02

Accessibility & Usability

Weight: 20%

A powerful tool that is inaccessible to retail investors scores lower. We assess onboarding friction, interface clarity, minimum investment requirements, and mobile experience.

03

Feature Depth

Weight: 20%

We compare the breadth and quality of core features: portfolio rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting, risk modeling, sentiment analysis, and reporting capabilities.

04

Pricing & Fee Transparency

Weight: 15%

Lower fees score higher, but we also reward clear, honest pricing structures. Hidden fees, confusing tier pricing, and undisclosed conflicts of interest reduce a tool's score.

05

Trust & Regulatory Standing

Weight: 15%

We check for SEC registration, FINRA membership where applicable, user complaint history, and publicly disclosed conflicts of interest. Tools with regulatory issues are disqualified.

Independence & Affiliate Disclosure

Some tools we rank participate in affiliate programs - if you click through and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never influences our scores or rankings. Tools are scored before we evaluate their affiliate programs.

We do not accept payment to alter rankings, write sponsored reviews, or guarantee inclusion. Advertisers and affiliate partners are clearly disclosed on all relevant pages.
